The Public Relations Student Society of America held their annual National Conference in Washington, D.C. from Oct. 15-19, 2010. Jessica Agudelo, De’Launa Carriere, Anaisabel Garcia, Nicole Garcia, Sabrina Gomez, Gretel Perez and Jacques Rozier, (members of the FIU PRSSA Chapter) attended this exclusive event which included speakers and CEO’s in the PR industries of Fashion, Politics, Entertainment, Sports and many others. These members have obtained critical information that will be imperative to their careers as PR professionals such as resume writing, career preparation, internships and job searching. The next annual PRSSA National Conference will be held next year in Orlando and FIU PRSSA hopes to attract more members to attend and be apart of this life-changing event.
This year PRSA and PRSSA worked together once again to bring students the ultimate National Conference experience as the nations historic capital Washington, D.C. provided innovation and opportunity as the host city. Our Chapter President, Anaisabel Garcia, arrived at the PRSSA 2010 National Conference on Friday October 15 with members of the Florida International University William C. Adams PRSSA Chapter. As a senior, this final trip to National Conference was particularly exciting and sentimental for Ana. Check out a few of the awesome pictures from Nationals and read about Ana’s experience below:
“As a senior, the PRSSA National Conference this year was beneficial in helping me figure out what direction to take in my career as well as very emotional since it was the last time I was going to see my national friends all together in one place. In attending almost every workshop possible that weekend, I soaked in so much information and made great contacts that I brought back home with me to help me find a job in my profession.
The Living Legends Panel taught me a valuable lesson: value people, not things, always contribute something back to society, and learn to balance your work and life. These are tips I hear constantly, but when they described it to us, it just put it all in place for me. Also, attending the workshop about what to do after graduation, a CEO’s advice, I was so honored to be listening to the advice from Walter Bateman, (photo attached) and listening to him telling us what to expect and how to deal with the demands of employers, but most importantly, to understand our worth as well.
At National Conference, Jacques and I met Cedric Bess, a FIU SJMC Alum, past Chapter President and past PRSSA National President. This was by far the most influential, non-formal workshop I was graced with. Cedric Bess painted a vivid picture of what our chapter used to be, and encouraged me to not give up on our goals and initiatives.
He raised my low spirits and gave the little faith I had a huge shock. I appreciated him taking the time in speaking to us and letting us know that we are part of something bigger than ourselves, and we should be very prideful in who we represent, PRSSA William C. Adams Chapter and to walk in confidence, as we have a rich history on a National level.
Conference was amazing! D.C. was beautiful! I learned lessons from the pros, learned lessons from myself and my leadership skills, and I appreciate my profession now more than ever.”
At this year’s PRSSA National Conference, we have an opportunity to improve the lives of young children and high-risk youth in the Washington D.C. area through donations to For the Love of Children (FLOC). FLOC provides young children and high-risk youth with resources to achieve educational and personal success and prepares them to become confident, life-long learners and contributing members of their communities.
If every Chapter brings a donation worth $50 to Nationals, we could raise enough money to purchase all their needed computers. Please help us help them reach their goal!
To help FLOC raise money for new computers, each Chapter can donate used printer ink cartridges and old cell phones, or through a monetary donation. All donations should be dropped off 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 15, in Lincoln 2-4 at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park during National Conference. If you are unable to drop off your donation at that time, you may give it to PRSSA Vice President of Chapter Development Kimberly Ciesla at anytime during the Conference. Make checks payable to “FLOC,” not PRSSA.
